From the moment you put them on dvd/cd they become read only (quite obviously) so if you copy then paste an image to the desktop it is still read only, you need to right click the image/get info and change permissions in order to edit or whatever.

When you put the CD in you get an icon, which you double click on to open a window?
Do the photos appear as jpg files on the CD?
Have you tried dragging and dropping them from the CD window into iPhoto?

If you double click on the photo file it should open in Preview, which will let you 'Save as' back on your hard drive.

Try quitting iPhoto, then open it again, but when you get the message about using iPhoto with your camera, click on "Decide Later".

Then put your CD in the drive. Move the iPhoto window to the left so you can see the CD icon, and double click on it so a window opens. You should see an icon for every photo you've saved, unless you've got them grouped in other folders, in which case you'll need to open them first.

Double click on one photo icon, and it should open in Preview. Go to the File menu, select Save As, and save it to your hard drive. I think it will ask you what format you want to save it as. I'd choose jpg, and then use the slider to select the highest quality.

Or drag and drop a photo icon into the iPhoto photos window. iPhoto should then import it.

Usually you never need to open Preview. If you ever download a PDF, when you double click on its icon, it will open in Preview. If you print anything and want to see what it will look like before you print it you can click on the Preview button and it opens in Preview. If you have a JPEG or any other picture format, if you double click on its icon it will almost certainly open in Preview.

I'm using OSX 3 and 4; if you're using OSX 5 or 6 I'm assuming Preview still exists in those and works in the same way. Perhaps some of the more up to date guys and gals can help on that one.
Yes Preview is in all versions(FM)
Also you could use Spotlight to find Preview, and make sure you haven't lost it!

I've just tried a CD with my 2002 iPhoto backup on it.
The CD icon appears on the desktop.
Double click opens a window in which there's a folder called 2002.
Double click on that and the window changes to show 3 folders for the months of July, August and September.
Double clicking on any of them causes the window to change to show folders for each day of that month which have photos.
Double click on any one of those and the icons for each photo appear. These are TIFF files rather than JPG, but it doesn't matter. Double clicking on the file causes it to open in Preview.
Dragging and dropping the icon to the desktop causes it to be copied there, and once again double clicking opens it in Preview.

Now of course your folders may not be organised in the same way, but you must see at some point icons for each photo. Double clicking any one should cause it to open.

Have you looked at the Info for a photo file?
Click once on its icon so it is highlighted. Then press the Apple key and I. A window should appear with information about the file. There is one item called 'Open with'. You may have to click on the little triangle beside it to see, but it should say 'Preview (default)'. If it doesn't, you can change it to one of the applications listed in the menu, but unless you or somebody else has changed it, the default application for opening most picture files is Preview.

Further down that window will be info about reading and writing the file.
If the info is about the file on the CD it is ghosted; you can't make any changes because it's on a CD.
However, if it's about the file copied onto the desktop then that info isn't ghosted, because you can read, alter and rewrite to that one.

Hope that helps.

So you're using OSX 5, which I've never used.
I'd expect the basic operations to be very similar though. (Unless anyone else wants to chip in and tell me they're not... )

SO - what is it you can't open? The CD itself, folders in the CD, or the photo files?

Try clicking on the icon which you can't open and highlight it, and then press the Apple and I keys together. This should open an Info window. Towards the bottom is a section called 'Ownership & Permissions'. You may have to click on the little triangle beside it to see the info. This will show who owns the file, which of course should be you. but as you're having problems perhaps it isn't.
It will also tell you if you can Read & Write, Read only, or have No Access. If it says you can Read & Write you should be having no trouble. If it doesn't, you should be able to change it by clicking on the up/down arrows to the right, provided you are the owner.

Another option could be to use your mate's PC to copy the photo files (but not the folders they're in) onto a memory stick. I'd have thought you should be able to put these back into your Mac.

I don't understand what the blue envelope is.

I'm assuming you're looking at the info for a photo file - a TIFF or a JPEG, and you can see a preview of the picture in the Info window.
If it says you can read only, have you tried changing it to Read & Write?
Are you looking at the file while it's still in the CD window? If so, you can't Write to it - it's a technological impossibility to re-write a file on a CD-Rom.

Have you tried dragging and dropping the picture file from the CD onto your desktop? When I do the copy on the desktop becomes Read & Write enabled.

Do you live near an Apple Store? If you do, it might be easier, if you're using a laptop, to book an appointment with a Mac genius. I would think he'd be able to sort it in no time - and it doesn't cost!

Sounds like your permissions are all to cock.

Open the hard drive, users, your username and click on desktop, choose 'get info' from the file menu and tell me what the permissions are. Also go 'accounts' in system preferences, how many accounts are listed there? Is your account listed as an admin account?
