Third person is a small design company based in central London run by Tim West and Richard Newey
Tim and Richard visited MacExpo looking to buy software and to investigate moving to OS X (otherwise known as Jaguar or Panther), they came across MacAssist and found the answers they were looking for.
"We knew that we'd have to upgrade to X eventually and we didn't want to leave it until the last minute" said Tim
They were impressed by MacAssist's knowledge & expertise, all communicated in a way that a non technical person could understand. MacAssist have been using OS X since the public beta so were in a unique position to advise them on the best way to proceed as well as possible problems they may encounter.
"One of our main concern was how Quark would run in the classic environment as we had heard that there were problems" said Richard, "But Will from MacAssist assured us that he was aware of the issues and there were a number of simple fixes available."
The first thing MacAssist did was to carry out an audit of their hardware and software. "Its very important to ascertain exactly what hardware and software the customer has installed as often the client doesn't have a complete knowledge of what they own."
"Once we have this information we are able to give a complete report on the customers readiness to move to X and what costs will be involved". Even if you're not looking to upgrade straight away it is prudent to asses you readiness to upgrade so that you can work towards that goal.
All the software was ordered along with a new 1GHz G4 tower and on February 13th and 14th the upgrade took place. Tim comments "I was amazed how smooth it went, I had X on my new Mac, all my software installed, and was back up and running in 2 hours."
When asked what they like about OS X, Richard says "It looks beautiful, its fast, its reliable and you can automatically change your desktop picture every 5 seconds. Everything in OS X is so well thought out and structured, it helps you be more organised and thus more productive. You begin to wonder how you ever managed in OS 9." When asked what they didn't like, Tim said "Seriously, nothing, its a beautiful OS that makes 9 look old and clunky. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending both OS X and MacAssist's OS X migration service to anyone".
As well as moving them to OS X MacAssist also advised them on better ways of working and changing their setup to increase network performance. The previous company had left a 12 port 10/100 network hub which we weren't utilising, MacAssist reconfigured our network, provided wireless access to our laptops through an unused Airport base station, and configured the network to allow us to connect to our Macs in the office from home."
